These are the first of the plums that I harvested today. We planted some Minarette trees out the front. A dozen trees in a tiny space, of assorted fruit, not much more than 2 feet apart. This is the first plum harvest, and I am really excited about it. The plum trees are laden and it looks like I will need to pick some every day for a week or two, as they come to ripeness.
We will obviously be eating them fresh, and DP loves his oaty crumbles, but I would really like to find some main course savoury ideas to use them. So I am currently Googling away to find some.
If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them.
The apples in the picture are a couple of Discoveries. They are MUCH nicer picked and eaten within a couple of hours, even the same afternoon the flavour will start to fall away. So I will be picking one each every day while they last. They don’t cook very well, they go to grey mush, the juice isn’t all that. They really are a good example of a fantastic product best grown at home.
Never made plum sauce! I was looking through some recipe books last night and found a few things to try. Maybe I’ll add this to the list 🙂
One, single, perfect plum. Enjoyed and savoured no doubt. Just back after a long hard day and will go out and check the tree over in a minute to see if any more have ripened during the day.
My Lovely Hubby loves duck in plum sauce, but I often substitute, chicken or lamb, so really it is ‘meat in plum sauce’ 🙂
I still have jars and jars of Plum jam that I made a couple of years ago when our tree went mad and really overproduced. It’s still fine to eat, so I tend to use that as the base for my plum sauces.
I’ve had my first plum harvest yesterday, too 🙂 Unlike your basket of fruit though, mine consisted of a single perfect Victoria plum…. LOL. I do have a few more to follow though, they just weren’t ripe for the picking yet !
